Colossal Squid

The colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) is a Southern Ocean squid noted for its heavy body and arm hooks. It is seldom encountered, and most records come from fragments found in predators or from occasional captures in deep fisheries.

Only a handful of specimens have ever been recovered, most from the stomachs of sperm whales. A complete specimen is preserved and on display at Te Papa Museum in Wellington, New Zealand. Its eyes, the largest of any living animal, measure up to 27 cm across.
